REVIEW:
The first time I encountered John Two-Hawks was at the Gem Theatre, a modest, historic theatre in a small town in Arkansas. I was enchanted by his performance of indigenous flute music and humble homilies. I didn’t know at the time, just how famous the Grammy® and Emmy® nominated Recording Artist was.
Most recently we got to visit during a book fair we both were participating in, put on by the Writer’s Colony of Dairy Hollow in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. After visiting with him I couldn’t wait to read his new book Of Mist and Stone, a carefully researched spiritual quest based on his personal travel experience of his two lineal identities, Irish and Native American, which isn’t as uncommon as you might think.
As I burrowed into the slim tome, I felt like I was going on an adventure, much like the first time I picked up Erich von Daniken’s pivotal spiritual exploration of ancient peoples, Chariots of the Gods. In John’s book, there were secrets to discover and connections to be made about exceptionally diverse groups of people, the Irish and Native Americans. What a reach I thought, but John’s bloodlines speak to him in a way that isn’t to be ignored, much like my own ancestry calls to me at times.
John has traveled around the world connecting with people through music and spreading his message of hope and spirituality. Along the way he has spent much time in Ireland seeking to connect his two diverse worlds. Studiously he has found some unusual parallels through ancient symbols such as circles. Lakota Holy Man, Black Elk once said “everything an Indian does is in a circle…everything (in nature) tries to be round. Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing, and always come back again to where they were.” Of special note in the book are sacred places John has personally visited such as the medicine wheel in northern Wyoming, a 1,500-year-old circle made of stones which reveals a mysterious knowledge of the cosmos and lunar cycles.
Place such sites in juxtaposition with the many ancient stone circles in Ireland that echo enigmatic properties of ancient cultures. Two-Hawks also highlights numerology found in nature as an ancient connection.
He writes eloquently of the songs the ancients knew. “To touch once again the mysterious powers of sacred numbers and their meanings. To return at long last to the oneness of celestial alignment that whispers to our spirit from the distant, ancestral place of mist and stone.”
I highly recommend you read the book and open your connection to the parallels of ancient cultures. Oh, and don’t forget listen to John’s music it will speak to you of these ancient parallels as well.
